Glacier National Park is one of our favorite places: Glacier National Park has about a million acres of peaks, glacier-carved valleys, and turquoise lakes in northwest Montana. Here are ten places worth building a trip around, in no particular order. Wherever you end up, remember the #1 Rule: Have Fun.
1. Going-to-the-Sun Road
The park's famous 50-mile drive crosses the Continental Divide with cliffs, waterfalls, and long views at nearly every turn. Go slowly, pull over at the viewpoints, and don't rush it.
The journey is the fun part.
2. Logan Pass and Hidden Lake Overlook
The high point of the road, at about 6,600 feet. The boardwalk and trail to Hidden Lake Overlook is an easy, rewarding walk with a good chance of spotting mountain goats and marmots.
Bring a camera and snacks.
3. Lake McDonald
The park's largest lake, with colorful stones under clear water. Skip rocks, paddle a kayak, or watch the sunset from the shore near Apgar.
Llet the sunset win.
4. Many Glacier
Often called the "Switzerland of North America." Hike toward Grinnell Glacier, rent a boat on Swiftcurrent Lake, and keep an eye out for bears and moose.
Pack your sense of adventure.
5. Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche Lake
A short, mostly flat boardwalk through ancient cedars leads to a trail up to a beautiful alpine lake. It's a good choice for families and first-timers.
Kids and grandparents can have fun together.
6. Two Medicine
A quieter corner of the park with a scenic lake, waterfalls, and good hiking. It's great for a slower day.
Sometimes the quiet places are the most fun.
7. St. Mary Lake and Wild Goose Island
This lake is one of the most photographed spots in the park, and Wild Goose Island Overlook gives a postcard view. Stop at sunrise or sunset for the best light.
Stop for the photo.
8. The Highline Trail
A famous trail along the Garden Wall with sweeping views. It's best for confident hikers who are comfortable with heights and long days.
Know your limits, then enjoy every step.
9. Apgar Village and West Glacier
Shops, ice cream, bike rentals, and the starting point for river rafting on the Flathead River. A good home base for families.
Ice cream counts as an activity.
10. Stargazing
Glacier is part of an International Dark Sky Park, so clear nights put on a show. Bring a blanket and a thermos.
